How to Remove the Windows 7 Evaluation Watermark

If you have installed Windows 7 RC, you might be annoyed with the evaluation watermark on the desktop. I know I find it very annoying, but luckily there is an easy way to get rid of it.

Getting rid of this evaluation string requires a hack to a file called "user32.dll.mui". Ensure that you make backups of system files before performing this hack and any hack is done at your own risk. The script will automatically make a backup of "user32.dll.mui", but it is always wise to make your own backups too.

OK, let's get started. Download the following file (right-click and select "Save Target As" or "Save Link As") and then extract the contents. Double-click on either the x86 or 64bit version, depending on which OS you have installed. You will then need to accept the UAC prompt. Click "Yes" when you see the following.

The Windows command prompt will now fire up and in order to begin the process, you just need to press "y". It may take a minute or more, depending on your hardware, so be patient.

After the process is complete, press "Enter" to exit. You will then need to log-off or restart your system for the changes to take effect. Logging off and back on seems to be sufficient.

Now you can see the evaluation watermark is gone!
